I was born at the end of August and ever since I can remember my mom has been saying “If you only waited a few days, you would have had sapphires”. What was she talking about? My birthstone. My sisters both “lucked out” with Emeralds and Rubies. As beautiful as sapphires are, I am proud and feel lucky to have peridots.
Peridots
First of all, peridots are cheaper. They are not one of the well-known gems. I have yet to find someone who owns them that was not born in August. A girl born in August could potentially own more jewelry than girls in other months just based on the price of the stone.
Second of all, I love green and find them beautiful. As I stated above, not many people own them, which makes my jewelry pieces unique. The light green goes with a lot of my wardrobe and makes a statement while not being too bold.
Lastly, I have the freedom to buy whatever precious gem I want. If I wanted pearls or sapphires or amethysts I could buy them without feeling guilty about straying from my birthstone. If you are not well-versed in birthstones, scroll below for a full list.
While I understand some women have attachments to their hair or their clothing, I am not sure I understand the attachment to birthstones. Walking through the streets of New York, aside from April and maybe June, you could probably identify what month women were born in. As if buying a sapphire was cheating on my peridot? I hadn’t realized that gemstones have feelings.
Birthstones
January- Garnet
February- Amethyst
March- Aquamarine
April- Diamond
May- Emerald
June- Pearl
July- Ruby
August- Peridot
September- Sapphire
October- Opal & Tourmaline
November- Topaz & Citrine
December- Zircon & Tanzanite & Turquoise
Admittedly, when I began writing this post, I did not know that some months consider more than one stone to be their birthstone. Do we, the other months, think this is fair? There shouldn’t be a choice! I’d be curious to see if anyone has an opinion or knows the history of the above.
Challenge
Consider buying jewelry, besides diamonds and pearls, outside of your birthstone. I know I will.
